THE ROBOT WITH THE HEART AND THE WILL OF A HUMAN.
On summer vacation with their family, Gunter Frankensteam and his sister Wanda were out playing in a field with oddly shaped hills. Gunter, a real genius with technology and very good with his hands, used washing pegs and strange metals that he found lying around to make a mechanism that would prank his sister. Little did he know, these odd hills were once the testing ground for alien technology. When Wanda came over the hill and triggered the trap, the metals reacted and wrapped themselves around her body. Gunter tried to rescue her but had to leave Wanda in the field all night. Gunter told Wanda, “I will fix this, Wanda. I promise”, before running off.
In the morning Gunter returned with parts from the alien scrapheap to try and get his sister back to normal. Realising that his sister was permanently transformed and would never be human again, he got to work trying to make her situation livable. Finding an all-terrain composite fiber omnidirectional wheel, he fixed this to her newly cyborg torso.
Then Gunter began to think, why make Wanda’s situation livable, when he could make her the ultimate robot? He grafted micro-visual optical relay sensors to her eyes for sight and gave her a trans-linguistic sound modulator so that she could speak any language and mimic any sound. His favourite touch was a periodic monopole antenna so that his sister would always be able to access the internet, and she would never be bored.
Once Wanda had been remade, Gunter became fearful of what his parents would think. They would surely never forgive him if his sister remained a robot!
He had heard of a robotics company that was looking to buy advanced machinery. He told Wanda that he needed to get one more part to fix her up completely and ran down to the town to call the company. Wanda, with her newly installed upgrades, intercepted the phone call and heard exactly what her brother planned to do with her. He was telling the company representative about a robot he had built, which had one wheel, relay sensors, a sound modulator and an antenna.
Wanda was furious and terrified. She decided that she would never be taken by these strangers, and that she would never forgive her brother for his betrayal. With no weapons, but her brilliant mind, Wanda ran away. She was reborn into Wheelie, the robot with the heart and the will of a human.
On her travels, Wheelie learnt much about the world that she had never been aware of as a sheltered, human child. There was a robot revolution taking place, and the world was about to be ravaged by a new World War. Wheelie had heard whispers of a rebel group, led by robots, called the Automaton Revolt. The leaders, Sting, Marsmellow and Jagson were legendary robots. Each had suffered and survived for years, and each was a hero or a leader in the revolution. Wheelie was fascinated by these robots and decided that there was no better way to learn how to be a robot than from such legendary role models.
Wheelie snuck into their camp one night, using her stealth and robotic augmentations, and waited for Sting, Marsmellow and Jagson to come to her. When they saw her, they went into defence mode, expecting an attack, but Wheelie calmed them down and told them her story. Marsmellow and Sting sympathised with Wheelie, while Jagson, incapable of human emotion, could understand the logic behind Wheelie’s actions. They agreed to allow Wheelie to study under them and develop her robotic powers.
Wheelie learned of the struggles the rebellion experienced. The leaders of the Automaton Revolt were being hunted by a secret branch of the government called the A.L.I. (Automaton Logistics and Intervention). It had a specialised militia devoted to quietly destroying the rebellion before it could stop World War 3. As the years progressed, Wheelie became instrumental in avoiding the A.L.I. agents, using her immense knowledge and robotic augmentations to figure out strategies that could be used against the A.L.I.
Despite the Automaton Revolt’s best efforts, war broke out and the world was ripped apart. A team of A.L.I. agents were sent out to destroy or deactivate the leaders of the rebellion, but one soldier became separated from the team, and became lost in the woods. In the distance, the soldier saw flickering lights, and thought it was shelter. He found a cave, but as he entered the cave, the lights blinked out of existence, plunging the terrified soldier into darkness.
He turned to run, but the exit to the cave had disappeared. Suddenly, a bright torch light shone through the dark, directly onto the soldier. It was Jagson’s photon emitter, only used when Jagson was in Kill-mode. The soldier tried to run, but found his way blocked by the immense bulk of Marsmellow. The soldier could see Sting was in the corner, recharging, with Wheelie working on upgrades for herself and her friends in the safety of Sting’s shadow.
Wheelie looked up from her work and saw the soldier, caught between Jagson and Marsmellow. Time stood still as Wheelie and the soldier looked at each other, recognising one another. Wheelie’s relay sensors suddenly turned red, and before anyone could stop her, she launched forward and charged at the soldier furiously.
Jagson tried to intervene, but was damaged in the fight. Marsmellow reactivated Sting, who pulled Wheelie and the soldier apart.
Wheelie struggled, but was too weak to shake off Sting’s iron grip. “‘I will fix this, Wanda. I promise’. Does that sound familiar to you, Gunter?!” Wheelie screamed. The soldier froze, finally understanding why Wheelie looked so familiar. It was his sister.
